The track today was a stair step. Michele Gillette put it in a small field. She felt he did his best with the scuff out of the turn.

I tried Anne's trick of using lots of treats to keep his attention on me. I'm such a klutz that he was getting treats and the expense of my skin. Michele suggested something that she learned from the Julie Daniels seminar. It has the same principle as Anne's. I drop 1 treat at a time and then he looks to me for the next treat.

For his articles I picked up the article, put the food reward on top of the article, and he had to sit to get the article. We'll play Michele's article game several times a week.

  1. Hi Beth, Great job getting a stair step track in. Can you describe in more detail how his behavior was at the turns with different augmentation? How did the scuff out turn look better than others?

Glad you are committing to article work. Train Articles every day if you can - even if it's on your couch in the living room. 5 min each day will make a big difference!

  3. Agree...nice job with working in a stair step! It's a plus when you have a track layer to keep up with all the turns :). Glad the treats are helping. Good suggestion from Michele - now that you've been using them you can layer in more structure around their delivery, duration, and expectation. Regarding Jen's comment...ultimately, you'll want the information in mind about his response to different augmentation at the turns (and on the legs). So, as you are practicing, try to work on turns, observe his behaviors with scuffed vs not scuffed turns or turns with food and see if you cannot describe the difference and why you might have liked on vs the other in terms of his behaviors.
And great suggestion by Jen how the article training!
